2012 Yearender: Better cure for Tibetan children suffering CHD
Another group of Tibetan children with congenital heart disease from Nyingchi Prefecture coming to Guangzhou for free treatments on Dec. 22, 2012 has bought a conclusion to 2012, during which hundreds of Tibetan children patients have recovered from CHD with help from inland medical aids and charity projects.
“I don’t know what congenital heart disease is, but I know mum will stop weeping for me if I can be cured”, said Pema Yangjen, an 11-year-old Tibetan girl of less than 1.2 meters in height and less than 20 kilograms in weight due to the disease.
The little girl’s wish has come true when she received a surgery in Beijing accompanied by her mother, and she is not the only one. In 2012, dozens of Chinese inland cities, hospitals and charitable organizations joined together for helping Tibetan children with congenital heart disease and providing them for free treatments.

Free medical check-ups were given to Tibetan children and teenagers throughout the region when medical volunteers from inland cities devoted themselves despite suffering from altitude reactions.
Doctors work to figure out the best treatment for the children who have undergone several expert examinations.
There are two kinds of treatments: some of them who have not large heart defect are suitable for interventional treatment, a kind of minimally invasive surgery with less risk and allows patients to quickly recover, while others will have more conventional operations.
Due to cold and oxygen deficiency, the incident of congenital heart disease is much higher than happened in low-altitude areas, one key factor to affect the health state of Tibet's population. Statistics show Tibet has over 10,000 children with congenital heart disease.

Furthermore, many other projects have been conducted to ensure children’s health. Some Tibetan counties started to provide free health check-up, keep health records for kids aged 0-6 and guide parents on scientific feeding and healthcare of children.
Tibetan kids have more places and amusement parks to play in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Tibet also carried out a project to improve the nutrition of 240,000 students in its agricultural and pastoral areas. Pupils and junior school students in the agricultural and pastoral areas will be supplied with fruit, milk, eggs and other snacks every day.
Moreover, Tibet will establish and relocate seven prefectural welfare centers and 52 county-level ones to provide for all orphans across the region. And funds also are used to help the orphans without independent ability above 18, as well as the disabled children of low-income families.
