High altitude medical lab to be set up in Tibet

An agreement of cooperation between the Tibet University and University of Giessen and Marburg, Germany was signed in Beijing, Sept. 17, 2012 to set up a high altitude medical laboratory and conduct exchanges of teachers and students.

"The project will definitely upgrade the research on high altitude medicine by taking advantage of the geographical condition of Tibet and the advanced technological and research methods of University of Giessen and Marburg thanks to the good bilateral ties between China and Germany in the recent years," said Mao Rubai,former Vice Party Secretary-general of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Dr.Friedrich Grimminger,director of the Hospital attached to the Giessen University said, it is going to be an exceptional project on the top of the world. It will contribute to the research on high altitude medicine and benefit mountain climbers. Modern medicine will no longer be conducted by any institution alone, but rely on joint cooperation.

It only took 12 months since this project was initiated in August 2011, which showed a mutual trust between the two political parties ,said Thorsten Schafer-Gumbel, chairman of the Social Democratic Group in the Gessen State Parliament.

The project will last for three years. So far the Tibet University is applying for funds from the central government, according to Cui Chaoying, deputy director of the Medical School of the Tibet University.

In August 2011, Thorsten Schafer-Gumbel, chairman of the Social Democratic Group in the Gessen State Parliament led a delegation to visit Tibet at the invitation of the Intearnational Department of the Communist Party of China. During his visit to the Medical School of Tibet University, he made a proposal on setting up a lab on high altitude medical research as well as exchanges of teachers and students between the Gessen University and Tibet University.
