Tibetan children receive free heart surgery in inland city

Nanjing city, capital of Jiangsu Province has launched a free treatment program for 30 Tibetan children with congenital heart disease since May 2012, which will be finished in two years.

The first batch of 5 children patients from Medrogungkar County of Lhasa had received surgery and would return hometown soon with a healthy heart, after their arriving in Nanjing on 24 July, 2012.   
The rest 25 children will leave for Nanjing in the coming two years.

Among the first batch of children receiving treatment, the youngest is only two-year old, while the eldest has been 13, whose name is Tashi Chodron. She has been diagnosed with congenital heart disease since 2008, but didn’t receive surgery because her family cannot afford the medical expenses.

It is introduced that children in Medrogungkar County endure a higher risk of congenital heart disease due to its average altitude of more than 4,000 meters.
