China's state investment in fostering ecological safety shelter zones in southwest China's Tibet has amounted to 2.5 billion yuan, bringing the local ecological environment under effective protection, as released at the Tibet's Development and Reform Conference.

"At present, ecology-related projects across the region are going on smoothly, such as the virgin forest protection, the development of alternative energy in farming and pastoral areas, the prevention and control of soil erosion, etc.," said Jin Shixun, director of Development and Reform Commission of Tibet Autonomous Region.

"The reforestation totaled 1.72 million mu during the 11th Five-Year Plan period," Jin said.

China now aims to build up the national ecological safety shelter zone on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau by 2030, through protecting and fostering three ecological safety shelter zones in different directions, namely, the northern Tibet Plateau and western Tibet's mountainous region (predominantly the meadow, grassland and desert ecological systems), southern Tibet and the mid-Himalayas (predominantly the brushwood and grassland ecological systems) and southeastern Tibet and eastern Tibet (predominantly the forest ecological system).
