Tibet provides 38.6 bln yuan for agriculture

Tibet invested over 38.6 billion yuan in agriculture during the 11th Five-Year Plan period, 1.8 times more than the 10th Five-Year Plan period, according to the 4th Session of the 9th Tibet People's Congress, Xinhua reported.

"Tibet strengthened its support for agriculture, which has benefited farmers further. Local farmers and herdsmen get more benefits with the series polices regarding 'issues of agriculture, farmer and rural area'," sail an official of the regional Agriculture Department.

"Issues of agriculture, farmer and the rural area" have been defined as the top priority, and we have implemented numerous policies and measures to nurture agriculture, improve farmers' livelihood and speed up the development of rural areas, said the official.

These agricultural favorable policies include preferential forestry policies, agricultural subsidies, the farming land and construction subsidies, home appliances going to the countryside, and the new type of rural cooperative medical care system for farmers and herdsmen.

In 2010, the direct fiscal subsidies for Tibetan farmers and herdsmen reached 1,800 yuan per person on average and the rural per capita net income reached 3,990 yuan. The rural Tibetan population in proverty with less than 1,700 yuan per capita net income was reported to have decreased from 964,000 in 2005 to 502,000 in 2010.
