Exploration of most dangerous road to Tibet (Ⅰ)
The BCZ Road, which starts from Bingzhongluo Township of Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, and ends in the Zayul County of Nyingchi Prefecture, Tibet, passing through the Cawarong Township on the way, is considered the "most dangerous road to Tibet".
Full of traffic obstacles including loose gravel, potholes, collapsed segments, landslides, and areas of unstable rock, it is the most primitive but also the fastest road of the Yunnan-Tibet highways.
Construction on the Bingzhongluo- Zayul Highway, known as the BCZ Road, was started in September of 2000 and completed on Oct 1, 2015, with the opening of the Nidadang Bridge. With a total length of 8.7km, the Bingzhongluo- Zayul Highway is the final section of the West Yunnan-Tibet Highway, and is also another important access route between Yunnan Province and Tibet Autonomous Region, after the 214 National Highway.
Before this road, the highways to Tibet including the Sinkiang-Tibet Highway, the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, the south and north Sichuan-Tibet Highways and the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, all had high altitude passes and therefore also a four month period when heavy snow cuts off the mountain roads that connect this region to the rest of the country. The Bingzhongluo- Zayul Highway follows the Nujiang River, heading north to the Cawarong Township, and then merges with the 214 National Highway. Therefore the whole route is at low altitude, without snow blocking any mountain passes. Its annual pass rate can theoretically reach 100 percent, meaning that it's useable all year round.
According to official statistics, it is about 1200km between the Bingzhongluo Township of Yunnan Province and Lhasa, a journey that only takes two days to complete. Along the road, there are numerous natural wonders. It is a true cross-country route and one of the tourism hot spots of China.
The Nujiang River is about 2,815 km long, and flows from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau into the Andaman Sea in Southeast Asia. For tourists, the journey on the BCZ Road starts with the gorgeous scenery of the Nujiang River. [Photo provided by Xiaoyao Huanglaoxie/tianya.cn]
