With a total length of 117km, the Metok Highway connecting Pome County and Metok County of Nyingchi Prefecture in Tibet will be completed and accepted the final inspection.

According to the Metok Highway project department of the Traffic Bureau of Nyingchi Prefecture, the reconstruction project of Metok Highway has entered the final stage, and the annual opening days will extend to eight or nine months from three or four months in the past.

At present, the Metok Highway has basically met the requirement of opening to traffic. Under normal circumstances, it only takes three or four hours to drive from the Pome County to Metok County.

"It is the only highway to the Metok County, so it has been semi-closed during the construction period," said the responsible person of the Metok Highway. The Metok Highway will end the history of China's last county which was not accessible to road.

After the completion of the new Metok Highway, the passing vehicles will travel through the Galongla Tunnel to avoid the traffic jam caused by natural disasters, such as debris flow and avalanche.

For the experienced drivers who are familiar with the Metok County, it only takes them three hours from the Pome County to Metok County. However, due to the landslides and debris flows which are happened frequently, the traffic jam often occurs, therefore, the drivers need seven or eight hours to arrive at the final destination before the construction of the highway.

One of the largest debris flows happened in the past was as high as a building with five stories, vanishing a small bridge near the Metok Highway. Thus, workers are building a steel bridge between the two mountains to reduce the occurrence of natural disasters such as the debris flow. The project has also entered the final stage.

After the completion of the new Metok Highway, the passing vehicles will travel through the Galongla Tunnel to avoid the traffic jam caused by natural disasters, such as debris flow and avalanche. Now the Metok Highway has already qualified to open to traffic.
