The white paper "Development and Progress in Tibet" issued on Oct. 22, 2013 by the Chinese government indicates that Tibet has established 47 various types of natural reserves, of which 9 rank state-level, 14 rank the level of autonomous region and 24 rank the county-level.

The total area of natural reserves in Tibet reaches 413,700km, accounting for 33.9 percent of the whole region's territorial area, which is among the top of China. Altogether 125 species of wild animals of national priority protection and 39 species of national key protected wild plants and animals have been well protected in these reserves.

The Serling Tso Black-necked Crane Natural Reserve is located between Bangoin County and Shantsa County, which belong to the Nagchu Prefecture. It is one of the 22 protection zones with ecological function in Tibet. According to statistics, there are about 7000 black-necked cranes and 150,000 Tibetan antelopes in Tibet, while the numbers are still growing. Tourists travelling on the street near the natural reserve could often enjoy the scenery of onrushing rare wild animals, such as Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys.

Tharchin, a Tibetan young man, works in the Shantsa Natural Reserve of Shantsa County as a forest police. He is responsible for regularly inspecting the life quality of rare wild animals in the natural reserve. The Shantsa Natural Reserve has already become a main living and breeding area for the black-necked crane and Tibetan antelope. "The concept of protecting wildlife has been deeply rooted among the people, and local herdsmen won't hurt the wild animals," said Tharchin.

Alo, a 57-year-old Tibetan herdsman is the wildlife conservation personnel in the Shantsa Natural Reserve. The local Forestry Bureau provides each conservator a motorbike, which is specially used for patrolling.

The construction of natural reserves in Tibet not only effectively guarantees the ecological development and protection of wildlife in Tibet, but also provides the local people numerous jobs.
