Happy home for disabled Tibetan children
A special education school fills a gap of no special education in Tibet before, which is of great significance in the education history of Tibet.
The Lhasa Special Education School, founded on December 1st, 2000, was established as the only comprehensive special school in Tibet recruiting blind, deaf and mentally handicapped students.

The school locates in Lhasa, capital city of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, covering an area of 19,900 square meters. Through years of development, there are now 176 students divided into 9 grades with 15 classes including preschool department, elementary department, junior high department and vocational department. The school has 49 faculty members including 43 specialized teachers and 3 of them were graduated as postgraduates. The teachers have been awarded many honors by the central government and local government, and they also have published many academic thesis.
According to Guisang, vice principal of the school, the school faced many difficulties at the beginning of its establishment. But, with the help of the government and people from all the social levels, the school’s teaching condition has greatly improved. Nowadays, every classroom is equipped with multimedia and projectors.

Recently, the school is establishing a new teaching building covering an area of 19,000 square meters and containing 20 classrooms and one teacher’s office. The building fund of 17 million yuan (about $2,726,800) is all invested by the government. Except for the bright teaching building, there are also new bathroom, new canteen, and new dormitory for students, which will be put into service soon.

Nowadays, free education (the government guarantees food, accommodation and tuitions for students)is provided to children from farmer and herdsmen families as well as urban poor families from their preschool education to high school education, including vocational education. Since parents no longer need to worry about the tuition, they are more willing to send their children to school.
Besides, the special school also offers additional allowance to students enrolled. The teachers in the school also get more salary from the government, which attracts more teachers with high educational background to come to the Lhasa Special Education School.
The school takes the responsibility of educating and cultivating all the disabled children in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. It is working hard to achieve the educational goal of serving all the disabled students and improving their comprehensive abilities to make them stand on their own feet. Though great success has been achieved, the special school and its lovely disabled children still need more attention and help from the outside world.
