Situating at an elevation of 4,200 meters, the Pangong Tso Lake meaning "long-necked swan" in Tibetan language, is 12 kilometers away from Ritu County of Ngari Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and one of the three major border lakes in China. 60% of the length of the lake lies in China.

In winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. The lake is dubbed by many small islands, where a large amount of birds under state preservation inhabits.
