A latest statistics from the Tibet Environmental Protection Agency shows the atmospheric environmental quality in Tibet was kept in an excellent condition in the previous year.

According to the statistics, the water quality of major rivers and lakes in the region was also higher than that of the national standard in 2009.

In 2009, the weather with good air quality in Lhasa, capital city of Tibet, took up 98.9 percent.

The inhalable particles were the major contaminations, mainly caused by lack of precipitation, dry climate and strong wind.

In addition, air condition in the vicinity of the Mt. Qomolangma also showed a good condition, attaining the first-class standard of the Ambient Air Quality Standard.

Major rivers and lakes of the region such as the Yarlung Zangbo River, the Lancang River, the Lhasa River, the Nyang River, the Yamzhou Yumco Lake and the Namtso Holy Lake, all reached the Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water at different levels.

In order to protect the environment, Tibet also exerted great efforts to supervise the water discharge of one national-level and ten regional-level enterprises to curb the industrial pollution.

With the Chamdo Sewage Treatment Plant being put into operation, the Lhasa Sewage Treatment Plant started to be constructed while the preparation work for such a plant in other five prefectures was also in full swing.
