Many female Tibetan antelopes have started to return home to the Sokya Chuma River Protection Area s, after giving birth near Zonag Lake, in Hoh Xil. The Sokya Chuma is one of the largest Tibetan antelope reserves.
The antelopes have to use the route, the Qinghai-Tibet Highway in the Wu-dao-liang Protection area, to return to their habitat. Each group of antelopes has a leader, that ensures the safety of the group, especially when crossing the highway.
The antelopes' migration hasn't been obstructed by traffic since the first train to Lhasa began five years ago because 33 migration overpasses have been built in concert with construction of the railway.
Tibetan antelope is one of the rare species of animals on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It was put under state protection by the Chinese government in 1988 and listed on the United Nations' Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1979.
