During the 11th "Five-Year Plan" period (2006-2010), a large number of key forestry projects were effectively carried out in Tibet to protect and develop the eco-environment, according to Forestry Department of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR),

In the past years, natural forestry protection project was implemented, farmlands were returned to forests, ecological greens were planted all across Lhasa and state-level nature reserves were built.

For instance, in the forestry protected area, cutting trees for commercial purpose is absolutely forbidden and forest-cutting quantum is largely reduced since the Natural Forestry Protection Project was launched 10 years ago.

As a result, the overall coverage of forests increased by 400,000 mu and the ecological function of forests in these areas was obviously recovered.

The project of returning farmlands to forests was started in 2002 and now has made remarkable progresses.

Statistics show that 250,000 mu farmlands was returned to forests; forestation in the barren land and mountain area reached 925,000 mu; mountains enclosed to facilitate forestation amounted to 50,000 mu. What’s more, these achievements benefited over 300,000 farmers and herdsmen directly.
