According to the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Department of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), altogether 1.1 billion yuan has been invested on returning grazing lands to grasslands in the project launched by the Chinese central government since it was launched in 2004.

So far, 56.11million-mu grasslands has been fenced and about 1,643-mu sowed again.

In TAR, the vegetation coverage has been greatly expanded on the grazing lands with grass growing higher and increased output of grass. Furthermore, the ecological function of the grasslands has been improved and wind-scoured soil surface reduced, which has effectively controlled the trend of the degenerating of the grasslands.

In recent years, the capacity of TAR sustainable development has been further strengthen with a huge amount of investment on agricultural and animal husbandry areas in TAR. The ecological environment has been improved thanks to the implementation of such projects as returning grazing lands to grasslands, preserving grasslands and utilizing biogas in rural households etc.

The project of biogas utilization in rural households has been going smoothly. By the end of 2009, a total of 610,000 farmers and herdsmen in 122,000 households had used clean biogas, which has drastically reduced the consumption of such biological energy as trees and grass and effectively protected the environment.

In addition, the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Department of TAR also started up grassland monitoring especially pest control accomplished the first survey of agricultural pollution sources.
