According to the department concerned, Tibet Autonomous Region will develop local energy resources as well as introduce quality energy to establish a stable, clean, safe, clean, economical and sustainable energy system at present and in the future.

The comprehensive energy system will focus on developing water and electricity energy complemented with oil and gas as well as new energy.

TAR is a rare region both at home and in the world abounding in water resource with a total storage volume of 200 million kilowatts, accounting for 29% of the national volume; its capacity of generating power totals 140 million kilowatts, taking up 20% of the national capacity.

It matters a lot not only for the sustainable development of TAR but also for the national energy structure and security to properly develop and use TAR's water resources.

In accordance with the official plan by the TAR local government, TAR will vigorously use water to generate electricity, actively utilize new energy resources, and build up a clean-energy system.

In the first stage from 2010 to 2012, a hydropower plant is expected to be established to alleviate the shortage of electricity.

In the second stage from 2013 to 2015, the electricity will cover the whole TAR. Meanwhile, electricity generated by wind energy and geothermal energy will be further developed.

In the third stage from 2016 to 2020, the water and electricity industry will achieve rapid development. "The electricity of TAR sent to other areas" will become a strategic supporting industry. The development of wind energy and geothermal energy will advance in a new stage. The traditional energy will be basically replaced by new resources. The whole TAR will enter into the era of electrification.
