Located in east Tibet, Chamdo Prefecture is tucked away in the Henduan Mountains and dissected by the Jinshajiang, Lancangjiang and Nujiang rivers, covering a total area of 108,600 square kilometers.

Neighboring Sichuan Province is on its east while Yunnan on the south and Qinghai on the north.
