Tibet responds to climate change with forest "respiration"

2010-06-28 11:19:00 | From:

Forests in the Tibet Autonomous Region(TAR) reserve an overall carbon sink of 953 million ton, ranking the first and taking up 12.2% of the total volume in jChina. TAR is taking advanctage of the respiration between "oxygen" and "carbon dioxide" to build China's overall capacity in responding to climate change, according to the Forest Bureau of TAR.

Trees absorb carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen through the function of carbon sink, namely photosynthesis, experts said.

Each cubic meters of forests absorbs about 1.83 tons of carbon dioxide and releases 1.62 tons of oxygen during its growing process. Therefore, it is incresingly important to enhance the development of forestry and increase the function of carbon sink in addressing the issue of global climate change.
