Tibetan people celebrate festival for better harvest

Tibet embraces the Ongkor Festival in July, one of the most important festivals for Tibetans, a festival for harvest worship.

Two hundred and thirty villagers from Jina Village, Konggar Country, Lhoka Prefecture, southwest Tibet Autonomous Region gathered around with brand-new traditional costumes handling colorful khadas and chant good wishes to thank for the harvest given by their beloved "God", reported by Xinhua.

The Ongkor Festival is an old festival in the rurual area of Tibet held in each August according to Tibetan calendar when all crops are waiting for harvest.

"Ongkor" in Tibetan means "surrounding the farmland." The "Ongkor" not only shows people's wish for a good harvest, but also a good time for them to rest.

Tashi Norbu, 74-year-old, the elderly in the village who is also a inheritor of regional intangible cultural heritage of "Jina Ongkor Festival" told the reporter that all the ritual ceremony is held to worship a better harvest next year, "People want to get rid of bad weather during summer, like the hailstone, which could cause a lot of damage to the crops, " said by Tashi.

With the big team of villagers parading the field, the highland barley appears always yellow and green, signifying the coming for ripe season.

Major activities include horse racing, shooting, singing and dancing, Tibetan Opera, stone holding and wrestling will be held during the festival.
 
Although the Jina village is only 10 minutes' drive from the Konggar Airport of Lhasa and it has preserved the most traditional celebrations of the Ongkor Festival, which is also the reason why it was entitled the regional intangible cultural heritage.

Since crops ripen in different times, the festival will be held accordingly in different areas in Tibet from July this year.
