Labrang Monastery holds Buddha unfolding ceremony

The Buddha unfolding ceremony was held in Labrang Monastery in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Xiahe County of Gansu Province on Feb. 20.

According to reports from Xinhua and China News, a 50-meter-long Manjusri(Lord of Wisdom) Thangka Painting was unfolded as Dharma vessels were played and merits of Buddha were chanted by monks. Tens of thousands of Buddhists from all over the world made the pilgrimage and offered hadas at the ceremony that lasted for over an hour. 

Labrang Monastery, built in 1709, is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug Sect in Tibetan Buddhism. It currently retains the most complete Tibetan Buddhist education system in China. The annual Buddha unfolding ceremony in the first month of the Tibetan calendar is one of the most important events at Labrang Monastery. During the event, there are Dharma dances, butter sculpture exhibitions and other cultural activities.
