As a county dominated by ethnic Tibetans who subsist on animal herding, Sertar is located in Sichuan's northwest plateau region, where Garze's northeast section engenders complex geography.

Linking it to Western Sichuan's typical topography is the Bayan Har Mountains range, rising to an average of 4,000 meters above sea level. The winters are long and there is no summer heere.

The land is made up of beautiful grasslands, lakes and rivers, as well as colorful and traditional Tibetans.

Sertar Five Scinece Buddhist Academy is the largest of its kind in the world, welcoming people from both Tibetan and Han ethnic groups to study and attend class regardless of whether or not they are Buddhist.
