The Molang Festival, the Grand Prayer Ceremony was celebrated in Kirti Monastery, Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Feb. 21, China News reported.

The Molang Festival, originated from the first month of the Tibetan calendar in 1409, was the day when Tsongkhapa, the master of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism gave first sermons in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa and prayed for blessings. It takes place between the third and 17th day of the first month every year.

During the festival, various religious activities are conducted, including sutra chanting, religious dancing, giant Buddha painting display and lighting up butter lamps. Moreover, many cultural relics will be exhibited such as statues of Buddha, Tibetan opera masks, drums and ritual musical instruments, Thangka paintings and butter sculptures.
