Year of Monkey culture exhibition opens in Lhasa

The "2016 Year of the Monkey Culture Exhibition" opened in Lhasa on Jan. 10, reported China News.

The exhibition features more than 200 pictures on the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year, and more than 100 items related to the monkey culture and the Spring Festival customs such as Thangka, engraved blocks, Tibetan calligraphy, masks, clay sculptures and others. In addition, there are live demonstrations by clay sculpting and printing inheritors as well as calligraphers writing couplets and auspicious Tibetan greetings for the audience for free.

In traditional Tibetan culture, "monkey" represents wisdom and ethnic origins. It is not only full of strong ethnic and regional characteristics, but it can also reflect the fine traditional Tibetan culture. This image frequently appears in fables, Tibetan opera, murals, sculptures, Qiangmu(a kind of Tibetan dance) and other intangible cultural heritage projects.
