Largest Buddhism grotto relics in Tibet being renovated

The first phase of the "Dungkal Peyang" relics’ renovation is expected to be finished within this year, Ngari of Tibet, Xinhua reported.

Launched in April 2013, projects including the reinforcement of caves and regulation of waters are nearly completed with an investment of 9.06 million yuan (1.45 million US dollars).

The second phase to renovate murals is scheduled to be opened soon.

Surrounded by the Zhada Clay Forest, the "Dungkal Peyang" relics of Guge Kingdom, the largest Buddhism grotto relics in Tibet, are composed of the Dongkar Tashi Choling Monastery and Peyang Grottoes, the former of which includes about 200 caves measuring 2,000 meters long and the latter of which covers more than ten thousand square meters.

The "Dungkal Peyang" relics, of great historic and cultural values, were listed among the 3rd regional culture relics protection site in 1997. Now they are applying for the 7th key cultural relics pretection site at national level.
