The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau on Wednesday unveiled the city's fifth civilian security organization – the volunteer Internet monitors.

The team of the Internet monitors now has over 3,000 volunteers and has reported more than 15,000 leads on various cybercrimes since 2014.

The Internet monitors assisted the police in fighting crimes such as fraud, prostitution, gambling and drug dealing, as well as the spread of pornography. The volunteers file reports whenever they found false information, malicious computer programs or content related to cybercrimes.

It is reported that in 2015, Beijing's police cleaned up 544,000 pornographic posts, deleted over 201,000 illegal messages and shut down more than 9,000 accounts.

The volunteer Internet monitors can be found all over the country, and 80 percent of them are millennials.

In early 2015, four unofficial civilian organizations - "Residents of Chaoyang District", "Dama's of Xicheng District", "Netizens of Haidian District" and "Persuaders of Fengtai District"- became a big hit on China's social media after police cited them as the sources of information that led to the arrests of several celebrities for drug-related crimes.

Now, the "Volunteer Internet Monitors" has become the fifth one.
